KPI Recording artist, Tuac, brings his spirited and uplifting soul sound to the streets with his debut EP “Higher Ground” on November 6th, 2012. The Brooklyn native ‘s first EP has been ten years in the making, brought to life through a collaboration with British writer/producer K C Price; the result is a solid set of dynamic gospel tinged R&B songs with a timeless and classic quality that is perfectly in sync with Tuac’s timeless and classic voice. With an rough and ready vocal style that has drawn comparisons to soul great Sam Cook and a social conscious more in line with the likes of Marvin Gaye than today’s fame seekers, Tuac sets himself apart from the pack. Casting aside generic slow sex jams and club bangers for songs about hope, strength and togetherness, that harken back to a more pure and powerful era in Soul music. Every track has is an inescapable emotional depth. From years of guest performances, open mics and busking on the NYC subway, to collaborations with artists like The Roots, Citizen Cope, Common and Wu Tang Clan; the time has come for Tuac to stand center stage and share his truly unique and auspicious soul inspired sound, not just with Brooklyn where his light already shines so brightly, but with the rest of the world.
The title track “Higher Ground” showcases Tuac’s uncanny ability to turn the trials and tribulations of life into something positive. This sunny RnB track is reminiscent of Aloe Blac’s “I Need A Dollar”. Tuac’s heartfelt delivery drips like honey over every melodic lift of the feel-good, hopeful Jackson Five style groove. The deeply soulful ballad, “Stronger” carries a well-deserved comparison to Ray Lamontagne, full of gutsy, dramatic vocals that serve as a bittersweet celebration of the human condition and the indomitable will to carry on. Tender strings soar above a simple emphatic gospel piano line battered by the crash of the cymbals, and once again, Tuac is singing about what he knows best, survival. When the bridge is stripped bare, Tuac fills in the empty space with the gravity, tenderness and intensity that only a true soul singer can muster. Another stand out track is the soulful and uplifting “Sunshine”, a blues-y mid-tempo cut about the hope and desperation of trying to hold on to the joy of love. The big band style gospel infused arrangement only amplifies the drama, showcasing Tuac’s knack for exposing the hope in a hopeless situation. On “Come Together” Tuac shows off his mainstream viability in a peppy, upbeat dedication to letting go of superficial material things and togetherness. The instrumentation flirts with 70’s funk dipped in a sugary, pop-R&B that’s reminiscent of CeeLo’s energetic retro soul radio hits; and his vocals soar to new heights. It’s giddy-catchy; a contemporary, confident conception of soul that is infectious from the first note to the very last pound of the drum. “Free Man” has all the elements of old school Motown with that subtle hint of classic rock n’roll, full of call-and-response background harmonies and a rambling beat right out of the 60’s. It’s all about breaking away from whatever is holding you back, allowing yourself to be free from the ties that bind. In his catchy and bombastic ode to freedom, there is no escaping the bouncy allure of this kiss-off song. Tuac’s enthusiasm is contagious.
The five tracks on “Higher Ground” catalog the honest and inspiring journey of a true artist, an absolute must listen for fans of classic soul and mainstream R&B, looking for music with a message.
