Review: Bridesmaids
Bridesmaids Right leading this she-wolf pack is Kristen Wiig, a Saturday Night Live Alum, as broke maid of honour Annie. Maya Rudolph as the bride Lillian and the beautiful Rose Byrne as the new best friend of Lillian and thereby new nemesis of Annie, Helen. Rounding off the pack are Megan (Melissa McCarthy), Becca (Ellie Kemper) and Rita (Wendi McLendon Covey).
The story mainly focuses on Annie and how her life is falling apart while she has to keep up the many duties of being the maid of honour for her best friend’s wedding. Competing for the role of maid of honour and best friend of Lillian is Helen who manipulates and sabotages her way through the matrimonial proceedings. We are also treated to a lovely cameo from Matt Lucas as Annie’s room mate. As well as surprise casting of the delightful Chris O’Dowd as police officer Nathan Rhodes; Annie’s love interest.
Now for the film it is crude no doubt and does not make any apologies for it. It does however make a massive leap into rom-com territory which might make you feel slightly cheated. It has many laugh out loud moments, though I did expect more but the most memorable scene has to be the dress fitting. I did find myself thinking that this is a weird bunch of friends and more frequently thought ‘I would never do that’ but then that’s just a sign of the lengths the film has gone to in order to shock and awe it’s audience.
Kristen Wiig’s performance has shades of brilliance, Maya Rudolph is relatively annoying, Rose Byrne is authentic and flawless but it is Melissa McCarthy that truly takes the cake. Not only is she the crudest, rudest and boldest of them all she is incredible beyond belief, simply because I did not think she had it in her.
Sometimes when you become used to someone playing a role for so long, as I was with Melissa McCarthy it become difficult to imagine them as someone else.
McCarthy has always been Sookie from the Gilmore Girls for me, even during her stint in Samantha Who? as Dena she was practically still Sookie. However, Bridesmaid Megan has erased that from my mind completely. Similarly I was surprised to see Roy from The IT Crowd but Chris O’Dowd charmed his way through the film and he is even more lovable now.
All in all, Bridesmaids is a fun watch. Kind of gross but fun nonetheless.
