Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart confirmed to reprise their roles in X-Men: Days of Future Past for director Bryan Singer.

When Matthew Vaughn stood down from directing duties for the highly anticipated X-Men First Class sequel, franchise guru Bryan Singer was quickly signed up to take charge of the project.

Having left the series after the second X-Men film to direct Superman Returns, Singer returned to produce First Class and is now adding some of the original cast to the sequel. Taking to Twitter to make the announcement that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen will be back as Professor X and Magneto, this has been greeted with a positive response from the fans who are more than happy to have these screen legends back.

Fans have already started feverishly speculating as to how the two timelines will meet, the story in the comic books has Kitty Pride transport her consciousness to the mind of her younger self to stop a chain reaction of events that leads to mass anti mutant backlash. It’s not been revealed how faithful to the source material Bryan Singer will be, but considering his track record we all know he can pull of a superhero movie.

Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicolas Hoult are all returning, it’s also been widely suggested that Hugh Jackman and Famke Jansen might appear in a cameo.

Recently it was confirmed that The Wolverine movie takes place after the events of X-Men3: The Last Stand, this all suggests to overlapping characters and adopting the Marvel Phase 1 structure of laying the ground work for future films.

Nothing has been confirmed but as soon as we get more details, you’ll be the first to know.

The Wolverine claws its way into cinemas on July 25 2013 and X-Men: Days Of Future Past is released on July 18, 2014.
