British actress to portray Princess of Wales in new film.

Naomi Watts will star in Caught In Flight, the story of Princess Diana's two years before her death in 1997.

The movie will be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel who described Watts as "a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana."

Director Hirschbiegel has tackled powerful stories in the past, telling the story of Hitler's final days in Downfall.

Naomi Watts said: "It is such an honour to be able to play this iconic role. Princess Diana was loved across the world and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen."

Her previous movies include The Ring, Mulholland Drive, King Kong and recently starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in the biopic J. Edgar. Watts earned an Oscar nomination for her role in the powerful 2003 drama 21 Grams.

Caught In Flight is due to start filming later this year.
