Fantasy-horror movie Underworld: Awakening has topped the North American box office charts for the weekend after collecting receipts of $25,400,000 in the USA and Canada, according to estimates.

The fourth film in the franchise once more stars Kate Beckinsale as Selene after the English actress had portrayed the vampire warrioress in the first two movies in the series.

The 38-year-old beauty decided to sit out the third movie, Rise of the Lycans, in 2009 – which starred Rhona Mitra, Michael Sheen and Bill Nighy – to spend time with her daughter Lily Mo Sheen, but returned for Awakening.

In this fourth movie, Beckinsale’s character, Selene, returns with revenge on her mind after being thawed following a dozen years of cryogenic freezing.

Awakening has so far taken $38 million in worldwide box office receipts after being released in Britain just last week.

Second World War drama Red Tails, meanwhile, took second spot over the weekend with $19.1 million.

The George Lucas-produced movie – which stars Cuba Gooding Jr, Gerald McRaney and David Oyelowo – tells the tale of African-American pilots who became known as the Tuskegee Airmen when they faced segregation during training but ultimately ended up being called up for active duty.

Action-crime film Contraband, last weekend’s biggest draw, fell into third spot following takings of $12,200,000 million to take the Mark Wahlberg movie to an estimated $46,100,000 two-week total. The movie collected $28,515,480 during its opening weekend.

The 9/11 drama Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, which stars Sandra Bullock, Tom Hanks and Thomas Horn, filled the fourth spot after taking $10,545,000, while action-thriller Haywire – which sees retired mixed martial artist Gina Carano starring on her debut movie role – secured fifth place with a decent, and somewhat surprising, estimated $9 million.
