Carey Mulligan tried to land Dragon Tattoo role by dressing as goth
Carey Mulligan The English actress failed in her audition quest, however, with the part ultimately going to New Yorker Rooney Mara in the David Fincher-directed crime-mystery film.
But the star of 2009 drama An Education was happy to admit that she was always unlikely to get the part of the tattooed and pierced computer hacker Lisbeth, but believed dressing up could help Fincher come to a decision based on how she might look in the role.
The 26-year-old spoke to newspaper The New York Times about her plans, saying: “I had read all the books. I thought, ‘They’ll never in a million years cast me’, and I was right!
“I thought it was a challenge and I just didn’t want to be associated with jobs I’d done before. I didn’t want to play the same parts.
“I auditioned once with the casting director and once with David Fincher. The second time I went I went in with piercings and black make-up and skinny jeans and it wasn’t obviously for me. (But) I loved the idea of it.”
Mulligan – who made her movie debut playing Kitty Bennet in 2005 release Pride & Prejudice – did admit that she has not yet seen The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, but is certain that Fincher arrived at the correct decision in casting Mara.
She added: “I don’t know how it’s come out, but I think she (Mara) is (Lisbeth). I wasn’t right for that.”
