Matthew Fox has been offered a role in 'Emperor'.

The 'Lost' star - who has filmed roles in 'World War Z' and 'I, Alex Cross', both due out this year - will take on the role of General Bonner Fellers in the inspired-by-true-life story set in Japan in the aftermath of World War II.

Following the surrender of Japan after the dropping of two nuclear bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, the country was effectively ruled by US General Douglas MacArthur, and General Fellers was his advisor when it came to the nation and its culture.

He was also given responsibility for deciding whether Emperor Hirohito should be tried as a war criminal.

Peter Webber - best known for his work on 'The Girl with the Pearl Earring' - will direct the project, which will also include a romantic story including a foreign exchange student with whom General Fellers had an affair with years before in the US.

David Klass and Vera Blasi have written the script for the picture, which will begin filming later this month in Japan and New Zealand.
