Meryl Streep is to receive the Honorary Golden Bear for lifetime achievement at the Berlin Film Festival.

The actress is highly-tipped for Oscar-success following her role as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 'The Iron Lady', and will be presented with the prize on February 14 at a screening of the movie.

Director of the internationally renowned festival Dieter Kosslick said Meryl was the perfect choice for the prize because of the ease at which she goes from one role to another.

He said: "We are delighted to be able to award the Honorary Golden Bear to such a terrific artist and world star. Meryl Streep is a brilliant, versatile performer who moves with ease between dramatic and comedic roles."

Meryl has won two Oscars during her career and remains the most nominated star of all time with 16 nods given - most recently for her part as chef Julia Childs in 'Julie & Julia'.

Previous winners of the Golden Bear award include Kirk Douglas, Sophia Loren, Gregory Peck and Sir Ian McKellen.
