Arthur Christmas tops UK box office
Arthur Christmas Arthur Christmas has returned to the top of the UK box office after seven weeks on release.
The movie tells the story of Santa's son who is set an urgent mission to be completed before Christmas Day. Featuring the voices of James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy and Ashley Jensen, the film from Aardman Animations has now taken nearly £20 million in the UK.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked drop to second and third, followed by Shrek prequel Puss in Boots and romantic comedy New Year's Eve.
Indian action sequel Don 2, Martin Scorsese's Hugo, Happy Feet Two and The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn all make the top ten as does the 1946 festive classic It's A Wonderful Life. According to the BBC, the movie has been screened over the holiday period at just 76 cinemas and has a higher average per location than the number one movie Arthur Christmas.
Boxing Day saw the UK releases of Daniel Craig's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, which topped the US box office earlier this week.
Next year, Tom Cruise stars in a big screen version of musical Rock of Ages, starring Russell Brand, Mary J. Blige, Alec Baldwin and Diego Boneta.
Meanwhile, Daniel Craig stars in his third James Bond movie in 2012 alongside Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris and Helen McCrory. Skyfall is due to be released in the UK in October.
