Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol tops US box office
Tom Cruise The fourth Mission Impossible movie has topped the US box office ahead of the Sherlock Holmes sequel.
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol starring Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner and Simon Pegg, took over $46 million at the Christmas weekend box office.
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, dropped to second spot taking nearly $32 million, with Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked dropping from second to third.
The Hollywood adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo debuts in fourth place with The Adventures of Tintin in fifth. Steven Spielberg's motion-capture movie has been given a delayed US release after topping movie charts in Europe earlier in the year.
Spielberg also features in seventh place with his adaptation of Michael Morpurgo's novel War Horse. The movie set during World War I is released in the UK in January.
Other movies in the US top ten include comedy-drama We Bought a Zoo, sci-fi thriller The Darkest Hour, rom-com New Year's Eve and family comedy The Muppets.
