It may be eight months away, but The Dark Knight Rises is causing one of the biggest stirs in recent cinema releases already.

Warner Bros. revealed that the trailer for the finale of Chris Nolan’s re-envisioning of the Batman franchise was downloaded 12.5 million times within the first 24 hours of being released on iTunes, smashing the 10 million record set by The Avengers back in October.

The film has some hefty competition coming in 2012 from The Avengers, The Amazing Spiderman and of course Peter Jackson’s return to Middle Earth with The Hobbit, but considering the $1 billion worldwide takings of The Dark Knight in 2008, it has to be a strong contender for the highest grossing film of the year.
