Sandra Bullock explains movie significance
Sandra Bullock Sandra Bullock has revealed that her latest movie, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, holds special meaning to her as she “saw it all” when the World Trade Centre in New York was attacked by terrorists.
The 9/11 film – which will be released in the UK on February 3 – is an adaptation of the Jonathan Safran Foer novel of the same name and recounts the tale of a young boy named Oskar Schell whose father was killed in the terrifying attack on the towers.
The 47-year-old star was deeply affected by the atrocities and revealed that she was close to the twin towers when they collapsed after two planes were crashed into them.
Bullock, who was speaking to weekday television entertainment news show Access Hollywood, said: “I was here on that day with my sister and brother-in-law.
“We were at a place and I got it because it had the view of the twin towers for my brother-in-law’s birthday, which is September 11, so we saw the second plane hit, we saw the people, we saw it all.
“It was just one of those days that you saw New Yorkers being the amazing human beings that they are and everyone helping and bonding together.”
While Bullock did not lose any family in the attack, she still finds it “hard to talk about” her experience that day.
She added: “It’s so hard to talk about. I didn’t lose someone directly, but I was there to experience other people’s loss.
“It’s not just an accident [or] something that happens, it was an intended action and that’s hard to understand.”
Bullock stars as the youngster’s mother while Tom Hanks plays his father, Thomas Schell Jr, in the film that recounts the story of how the bright nine-year-old starts out on a quest to discover the lock that matches the key his dad gave to him before his death in the atrocities.
