Anne Hathaway finds it easier to get naked than trying to master a British accent
Anne Hathaway has revealed her struggle to master a British accent, admitting she finds it easier to get her clothes in front of the camera.
The New York born actress, who plays a Yorkshire girl in her new movie ‘One Day’, insists she is far more confortable stripping off than speaking in her character’s northern English accent.
Anne – who is no stranger to naked scenes – said:” "I was more nervous about the accent than nudity.
"I mean, you can do sit-ups as prep for the nudity. But there aren't a lot of vocal sit-ups that you can do. Maybe it's because I have more experience in my life being naked than pretending to be British.
"So I got more comfortable quickly with the nudity than I did with the accent."
Despite her momentous challenge, the actress buckled down and worked hard to master the accent, but was disappointed to have never been able to dream in her British voice.
Anne – who read the book 'Watching the English: the Hidden Rules of English Behaviour' to help her with her accent – told The Sun: "I stayed in the accent and used British-isms. I was a little disappointed because I hoped I would start dreaming in the accent.
"That one morning I would just wake up and be in the accent. But that never happened. But once I was in it, the American accent became the 'other'. It was hard to mix the two so I just wound up staying in it all the time. At the wrap party it freaked people out when I started talking like me."
Jim Sturgess – who stars alongside Hathaway - jumped to his co-star's defence by saying people should not give her a “hard time” for the accent she uses in ‘One Day’.
Speaking to British television show This Morning, he said: “It seems she’s in the firing line for that but she’s an actress. And when you’re an actress or an actor you play lots of different people from different walks of life from different parts of the world.
“That’s what makes acting so interesting so it seems a shame that she comes over here [to the UK] and people are giving her a hard time. She does an amazing job in the film.”
