James McAvoy James McAvoy has joked that Scottish actors working in the States are "like rats".
The star said there were so many of them in America, the industry faced being overrun.
He said: "We're like rats.
"You're never more than three feet away from one [a Scottish actor] in New York."
He added: "I think there's just not very much work for Scottish actors in Scotland so we end up going abroad and coming here."
The Glasgow-born actor also said there were no other actors in his family - "just con artists".
He appeared on a special daytime talk show of Live With Regis & Kelly in which the audience was made up entirely of navy officers, to mark New York's famous Fleet Week.
James, 32, will next be seen on screen in the new X Men prequel, X-Men: First Class.
It is set for release in the UK on June 1 and in the US on June 3.
