James McAvoy could be set to play Elton John in a biopic about his life.

The Scottish star, who found fame in the UK’s version of Shameless, has been offered the part in the movie, which is being made by Elton’s film producer husband David Furnish and British screenwriter Lee Hall.

Elton told the Sunday Express he would love McAvoy to accept, but in the meantime, the hunt for a suitable actor continues.

"James could do it and he's already offered. I'd just like to make a really great film about my life story,” he said.

"We have a great script already by Lee Hall, who wrote Billy Elliot. Obviously it's not going to be your normal run-of-the-mill film because my life has been kind of crazy, and I think it's important to do a surrealistic take on my life. I'd love to do that. This business is so incredible."
