Hugh Jackman says his new movie Butter is an “irreverent, hilarious satire”.

The actor plays Boyd Bolton in the upcoming movie, which is about a butter-carving competition in Iowa. Boyd is the ex-boyfriend of Jennifer Garner’s character Laura Pickler, who is obsessed with the competition.

Hugh was drawn to the movie because it made him laugh so much, even though his character is not the most pleasant in the movie. “Boyd Bolton runs the big car dealership in town. He was the boyfriend in high school of Laura Pickler, and in our story he briefly comes back into her life because she realises he can do something for her, or will, that no one else would,” he explained to ET Online. “The way we worked it out is that he was dumped. They were prom king and queen at school, everyone knew them, and she dumped him. Even though he’s now married and has kids, the moment she turns up on his doorstep he drops them all. It’s like, ‘Thank you God, I have a second chance.’ If you like Little Miss Sunshine or Fargo, if you like those kind of irreverent, hilarious satires, you’re going to love Butter.”

Jennifer is also proud of the film, which is slated for release next year. The actress explained she has always enjoyed movies which cover topics she knows nothing about, but feature characters she can relate to.

Laura’s husband Bob, played by Ty Burrell, is a champion butter-carver, and she sees it as the way to improve their life. When he decides to change careers, Laura finds it hard to cope.

“He decides, without telling her, that he’s going to give up butter carving and become a judge and it makes her crazy because she had no control over it and her whole life has changed at the drop of a hat,” Jennifer explained. “She’s grasping at straws trying to safe herself.”
