Interview Time: Skye
Skye What has been the driving force behind you developing into a solo artist?
Once Paul and Ross decided they wanted to work with other singers and try new things I was free to do my own things. I love to sing and create my own music. I don’t keep a diary I write songs instead.
Do you continue to have any relationship with Paul and Ross from Morcheeba and is it strange seeing them carry on working – even on a low level with the band you were part of for so long?.
I haven’t seen Paul or Ross since 2003. We used to see each other when working in the studio or on tour. Seeing as we don’t do either of those things together anymore, we don’t see each other. I did feel weird at first hearing about Morcheeba gigs but now I’m busy doing my own thing its fine.
Finding your own inner power to write these impressive lyrics is a great acheviement, and to produce an album. How do feel as an individual ,does if feel significantly different from being in the group Morcheeba?
It does feel different when in the studio. I had a huge input lyrically and musically. On tour its fun as I have a new band. I still sing Morcheeba songs as though they are my songs – they are my songs! ?
You have collaborated with some inspiring producers, how was the experience this time round as solo artist did you feel you had more control over the creative process?
It was great to work with Pat Leonard and Daniel Lonois. They were very open to my ideas and I learnt a lot from them both
Was it difficult being away from your family whilst you were recording the album and did the feelings become focused in any of the tracks?
I really enjoyed working out in LA. I stayed connected via iChat and of course the phone. Yes I did miss my family, but I think I became more focused in the music.
Do you hope to tour with your album, are there any dates coming soon?
I’ve been touring since May on a European tour. Went to Russia, Italy and just got back from festivals in Slovakia. I’m on my way to America for an acoustic tour. A UK tour will be sometime in October/November so check out myspace.com/myskyesite for dates
You are from Jamaica, have you released your music over there, have they responded well to your sound?
My roots are Jamaican but I was born and bred in East London ennit! ? I don’t know if any music has been released out there but it would be cool to do a concert there.
Do you download music from the internet and do you have any views on the whole download debate including file sharing sites?
I do occasionally download the odd song from itunes. I don’t have Any major problems with it
What’s next for you on this very personal journey of life after having success with a group and now hopefully as a solo artist?
Well, I’m looking forward to touring revisiting places that I’ve been with Morcheeba like China and Australia, I’d love to go to Japan. Morcheeba’s success wasn’t an overnight thing and I don’t think I will be either. I’m ready to put the ‘work’ in (if you can call it work!) I love what I do and hope it continues for many more years.
