Interview Time: Nina Jayne
Nina Jayne We got a chance to have a little chat with Nina Jayne at the BMG HQ:
How would you define your sound?
I would define my sound as being alternative R&B, influenced by listening to gospel and soul sounds from Sade and others.
Are there any personal influences within the tune “No Ordinary Pain”?
The tune was written purely from an observational point.
I was on the underground and I saw a man begging for money, so many times I have given money and many times I haven’t. You don’t know were people have come from or why there in the situation they face, it was important for me to write the song to show myself the value of what I have.
When did you get into the music industry (get your big break)?
My big break was during the 2001 MOBO unsigned , this was the first competition I had ever done and the first time I performed on stage, I won the competition and have not looked back ever since.
You toured recently with the legendary Lionel Richie what was that like?
The tour itself was amazing, every night performing in front of thousands of people. It was great people were really receptive. Lionel was lovely he always had time for a hug and kiss. He always asked how I was coping and I if I was tired yet, he gave me advice as well. It was a great experience and I may not get the opportunity again so it was very memorable.
You hosted a show on Kiss Smooth grooves, did you enjoy it and is hosting something you would like to do?
Hosting was good fun, it helped me connect with people through talking rather than singing, it helped me performance wise to vocalise to the audience.
Your mother and sisters sing, do they do it professionally?
My little sister has her own band called Soulsign there absolutely amazing, completely different from my sound, quiet rocky, real heavy soul sound, they are brilliant: I love them.
It was great growing up always singing sometimes it was annoying but it paid off well.
Do you have any plans to go to America like Craig David and Lemar?
I definitely think it’s vital, I don’t have any immediate plans to go over there, see how my album goes next year.
Any last inspiring words?
Be prepared to compromise and make sacrifices, know yourself, enjoy what you doing and press on never give up.
