Interview Time: Selah
Selah Having already achieved Radio 1 daytime support as featured vocalist on the Blame single Because Of You claiming Single Of The Week on Sara Cox’s show whilst Zane Lowe dubbed it Hottest Record Of The Year. Next week sees the release of her first solo single 'Woman's World' produced by DaVinche and featuring the talents of Mz Bratt, Duchess and Sadie Ama. Musicrooms steals her for a quick chat ahead of the release...
Women’s World’ is out this week – what’s the story behind it?
'Woman's World' is a female anthem, depicting strength and self assurance. It was a way of challenging the scene and doing something that’s rarely done among the females in the urban scene, but regular with the male MC’s. It got so much love and support, which I truly appreciate.
Sadie Ama, Mz Bratt and Duchess feature on the single – how did you all meet? Any funny stories about the girls?
I had never met Sadie or Bratt prior to going into the studio with them, so I was a little concerned, in case we didn't vibe with each other. However, the girls were very friendly and a pleasure to work with. I haven't met the Duchess ladies, however, I'm in contact with one member Shanie via Blackberry. I feel like I know her now without having met her.
You’ve featured on other people’s songs and performed alongside some big names but how does it compare to doing on your own?
I enjoy working with artists. The difference with working alone is that it's 100% you. Your feelings, your style, your sound etc. I love it either way as you can achieve different, but good results with both.
Who or what has been your biggest inspiration?
Beyonce is my biggest inspiration. Having someone who entertains me that much, and seeing her achieve so many things I'd love to, is very inspirational. As well as that, I love music and performing, so I'm inspired to work at it, especially if it means I can spend the rest of my life doing that.
What are your Top 5 most influential songs?
I love so many songs, that the list will probably change the next time someone asks me this question, but here goes:
Michael Jackson- Rock With You
Prince- Diamonds And Pearls
Stevie Wonder- I Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer
Lauryn Hill - Ex Factor
Jazmine Sullivan - Lions Tigers And Bears
Do you have any plans to do live performances?
I've done many live performances, and of course I plan to do many more. At the moment, I'm working on my sets to make my shows stand out, and guarantee entertainment for the audience.
What’s next for you …is there an album in the pipeline?
My main focus currently is the follow up single to Woman’s World, so I’ve been in the studio working on my next offering. I am looking forward to focusing on the album and defining the sound and concept.
What makes you …
i) Turn up the radio?
I mostly listen to the radio when I'm in a car or on the go in general,so I like to hear something lively and up tempo.
ii) Turn off the radio?
If a DJ spends too much time talking over the tracks, it can be a real off put. It messes up the vibe, that way I can't get into the song.
Last year you toured the UK for ‘Follow Your Dreams’ – can you tell us about that?
The 'Follow Your Dreams' tour was a lot of fun. It was great going from city to city and meeting different people. It was very tiring at times though, like the early morning performances, the long drives and the lack of sleep. In the end, it was a slight insight to what going on a national tour would be like. Children are very genuine and appreciative, so it was fun performing for them and getting them involved. I took mailing lists with me, that way I could keep in touch with them and keep them up to date with all that I'm doing. It was a great way to build up my fan base.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
In 5 years time, I see myself selling out arenas and being a top selling artist in the world. That's my dream, so that's what I plan to achieve.
