The forthright Irish singer was previously seen to tear up a photo of Pope Benedict’s predecessor Pope John Paul II, on hit US TV show, Saturday Night Live.

The pontiff’s resignation shocked the world yesterday and is expected to come within the next fortnight but ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ singer Sinead reckons the church ought to take the opportunity to rebuild following numerous cases of alleged sexual abuse and congratulated Pope Benedict on his decision.

O’Connor, 46, took to her website to issue a statement stating: “I would like to congratulate Pope Benedict on his wise decision to retire before the very worst of what has been going on is discovered. I appreciate his alluding to some of it in his statement and assure him The Most High forgives those who can faithfully say they did wrong.

She continued: “The church has been brought into dreadful disrepute by lies and blasphemies against The Holy Spirit. Benedict’s greatest achievement is this act of retiring. There is a chance now for the church to be re-built and made fit to house The Holy Spirit.”

Dublin born Sinéad has courted controversy with the church before. As well as the John Paul II picture tearing incident, she herself was ordained a priest during the 90’s, although the Roman Catholic Church do not recognise the ordination of woman.

The Pope cites old age and failing health as reasons for his resignation.

Benedict is not the first Pope to resign the churches top post but it has been six hundred years since Pope Gregory XII last did so.
