Muse And Kasabian Big Winners At The Shockwaves NME Awards
Must beat Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, Biffy Clyro and Kasabian to claim the prestigious Best British Band title at the ceremony at the O2 Academy in Brixton, London. Singer Matt Bellamy admitted the group were in shock as he collected the award. Muse also picked up the Best Website prize at the awards, which were determined by 3.6 million votes cast by readers of the British music magazine.
As he collected the Best Band trophy, Bellamy told the crowd the win had come as a “great surprise”, adding: “I didn’t expect to win that one at all, it’s very humbling to win that.”
The brooding frontman was also crowned Hottest Male ahead of Liam Gallagher, Billy Joe Armstrong and Alex Turner.
Kasabian also had reason to celebrate last night after triumphing in the Best Album category. They were given a second prize for Best Album Artwork for West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum.
Legendary rocker Paul Weller was presented with the Godlike Genius accolade by The Clash guitarist Mick Jones and Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie.
Before closing the show with a medley of his greatest hits and new material, he accepted the award saying: "I'm embarrassed that people said so many nice things about me. They're all true."
Ska stars The Specials picked up the Outstanding Contribution to Music prize, which was handed to them by Damon Albarn.
