Bjork remembers Manchester rave scene
Bjork The Army of Me singer – who introduced the album with a pioneering live gig at Manchester’s International Festival – recalled the days when she would dance “until the early hours” during the late 1980s and early 1990s at warehouse parties.
The Icelandic star spoke to commercial radio station XFM about her days – and nights – in the northern city, saying that “back in 1989 and 1990 I used to go there to raves”, pointing out that she would “sneak away, like have an affair from my indie band [The Sugarcubes], and be caught up in raves until the early hours, with my rave guides, 808 State, so I hooked up with all of them”.
However, the 45-year-old singer – who reckons her songs are “folk” music – has admitted that her Bestival headline show next month on the Isle of Wight will highlight that her stage performance is a “work in progress” as she attempts to create a new sound during the next few years.
Björk added that, “when we decided to do Manchester, I had to settle with the fact that Manchester would be a work in progress – a prototype – and I think Bestival is going to be the same”.
The Big Time Sensuality hitmaker also stated that “it is not going to be perfect by the end of this tour – which will be a couple of years or something – it will be a fully grown creature”.
Björk also recently recommended that fans of her music should hack Biophilia – which is scheduled to be released on September 27, four years after her last album, Volta – following criticisms that the album will only be obtainable on iPhone, iPad, and iPad touch devices.
She spoke to music webzine Drowned in Sound, saying that, while she is “not supposed to say this, probably, but I’m trusting that the pirates out there won’t tie their hands behind their back”.
