Florence Welch: Alcohol inspires me
Florence And The Machine The 23-year-old British singer shot to fame last year when her band Florence and the Machine’s debut album Lungs went straight to the top of the UK charts. The group, consisting of Florence and her four-piece backing band, are currently working on their second album.
Florence writes all of the band’s songs, and has revealed that she comes up with her best material when she has had a few drinks.
"Being drunk makes me less self-conscious, so I will sing whatever comes to me," Florence said in an interview with USA Today. "The problem with that is that I never remember what I sang. But thanks to the wonders of technology, it can all be recorded."
Florence writes her songs from personal experience. She uses music to express her “darkest” feelings, but says the resulting songs are upbeat and not depressing.
“Music is an outlet for my frustration when I go to my darkest place," she explained. "I'm scared and joyful at the same time. But all my music is heartfelt and sincere."
Florence says using her life as inspiration can be problematic. She admits she can be frustrating to be around because she is always off in her own little world thinking up new songs.
"I can't worry too much about the everyday things,” Florence said. “Otherwise I'd lose touch with my own world. That helps me as an artist, but it's frustrating for the people around me. I'm vaguely functional, but there's always something slightly off."
