Bono returns after back trouble
Bono The 50-year-old U2 frontman was rushed to a German hospital two months ago after injuring himself while preparing for the band’s North American tour. His spine was reportedly so badly damaged he was partially paralysed, and had to undergo radical surgery quickly if he ever wanted to walk again.
The procedure was a success, but Bono was forced to take two months off to recover from the injury. He made a triumphant return to the stage at the concert in Turin, Italy, over the weekend, playing to a sold-out audience at the city’s Olympic Stadium.
Bono showed no sign of his injury, dancing around the stage with his characteristic vigour. Before the show, the rocker thanked his fans for their letters of support and paid tribute to his bandmates The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton.
"This band is like a family. It's a family business, U2. I am the prodigal son. I would like to thank my brothers for their patience,” Bono said.
U2’s manager Paul McGuinness said Bono has worked extremely hard to restore his health. He also revealed that the band had been back in the studio recording new material during the star’s convalescence.
"That's a process that goes on all the time," he told Reuters. "The doctors are very confident. They certified him fit to perform. It's really a very short time for a spinal injury."
